Malaysia is Truly Asia!

Our trip to Malaysia for Christmas and New Years was truly fantastic. Our first stop was the tropical island(s) of Langkawi. We were lucky enough to travel with our Suzhou family – Pedro, Melissa, Migdalia, and Alex. Please enjoy the photos!

Kuala Lumpur

The second leg of our trip was in Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Our fabulous friends from Stryker Suzhou that are native to Malaysia were gracious enough to show us the ropes of this amazing city.

Recommendations from our trip:

Where we stayed:
-Kuala Lumpur – Nikko Hotel
Walking distance to the Petronas Towers and KLCC. Great rooms and service. Two thumbs up!

-Langkawi – Sheraton Beach Resort
A bit far from the action, but we liked that it was peaceful. Resort was a bit old, but had been renovated. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

-Langkawi - Berjaya Resort
This was just up the road from the Sheraton, so similar location. We didn’t love it here. We had our own little cabin in the forest, but it was pretty worn down. The staff and service weren’t that great either. They also seemed to be out of a lot of things which was frustrating. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it.

To Do in Langkawi:
-Island hopping Day Trip - Rampant Sailing http://www.rampantsailing.com/
This is a must do activity in Langkawi! We spent 1 of our 5 days on Bea and Carl's pristine catamaran sailboat touring the southern islands of Langkawi. They are fantastic hosts and experts of the area. Island hopping, sea kayaking, swimming, and a jungle walk are on the itinerary (all optional of course). It was also nice to relax and enjoy plenty of cold beverages on the clean and not crowded boat. They only take 10-12 guests so it's a nice size group with loads of room on the boat for all. Two thumbs up!

-Rent a scooter and ride around the island – there are loads of scooter rentals. You can rent a scooter for 40 RM for 24 hours (about 12USD). All you need is a driver’s license and the cash!

-Sunset Cruise – We enjoyed the scenery but were not impressed with the boat we chose. Don’t use Tropical Charters. It’s a bit cheaper than others, but the boat was dirty and overcrowded.

-The bat caves and crocodile farm were pretty cool, but not a must see,

-Snorkeling out at Pulau Payar is also supposed to be great, but we didn’t make it. Our boat was rammed the day prior to our trip so we couldn’t go out!
-Lake of Pregnant Maiden (supposed to have special fertility powers!)
-Cable Car (this was closed due to weather the day we tried to go)

Where we ate in Langkawi: The food at the hotel was good, but expensive of course!
Restaurants:
-Orkid Ria – pretty good for seafood, but seemed touristy and was pricey
-PutoMayo – pretty good for some Chinese style dishes, just OK
-Oasis Beach CafĂ© – pretty good food (go for the Indian food), but great location right on the beach!
-The local dives serving Laska is a must try!
